"And Avram took his wife Sarai...and the souls they made in Haran...." Bereishis 12:5
"The souls" refers to the souls which he had brought under the sheltering wings of the Shechinah, for Abraham converted the men and Sarah the women, and Scripture accounts it to them as if they had made them...." (Rashi)
Who was avraham avinu?
According to Maimonides, all converts to Judaism may consider themselves descendants of Avraham Avinu and may recite the phrase “G-d of my Fathers” when they pray. Everyone who converts to Judaism and believes in the unity of G-d according to the Torah’s principles is considered a follower of Avraham Avinu. Just as Avraham Avinu elevated his generation with true beliefs and character refinement, so he is credited with the rectification of all future converts to Judaism. He is considered the father of those of his offspring who emulate and follow him, and the father of every convert to Judaism. (Hilchos De’as 6)
Through Avraham’s open doors passed the men who would come closer to G-d and abandon idolatry. Those who ate at his table left with an abiding satisfaction and protection, having absorbed the holiness of the food prepared by his wife, Sarah Imenu. The holiness of the light of the Sabbath lamp of Avraham's wife, Sarah, survived the striving of the week. Each week, her lamp brought new holiness, enhancing the holiness of the preceding week.
Avraham Avinu endured many trials, ten of which are recorded to highlight the components of the spiritual DNA which he passed on to his children, the Jews. Rabbi Tuvia Basser brings from the commentaries of the Maharal of Prague on The Ethics of the Fathers that G-d tested Avraham in all possible ways to actualize his full potential. Through these tests, G-d endowed Avraham with many good qualities so that, through his righteous reputation, he would serve as mentor to the entire world.
Ohel Avraham Avinu’s purpose is to bring sincere, righteous converts to Judaism under the sheltering wings of the Shechinah as true sons of Avraham Avinu.
